Gear Review: Jetboil Flash Cooking System

The Jetboil Flash Cooking System is by far one of my favorite backcountry hiking stoves to bring with me on pretty much any outdoor outing.

Whether I’m making morning coffee, tea, or heating up some water for instant meals the Jetboil Flash Cooking System is incredibly simple to use and very easy to pack.

I’m no backcountry chef, I prefer simple instant and easy meals that take zero to no cooking knowledge or time to create.

It’s all about instant reward after a day of hiking and when I purchased the Jetboil Flash Cooking System I was so excited to be able to have my meals a little faster and a little easier to make.

The Jetboil Flash Cooking System boils two cups of water in just over 2 minutes, and has a color changing heat indicator to let you know when it’s getting hot.

Aside from it just looking cool, It also packs some serious functionality.

Everything in the above picture fits inside or attached to the Jetboil Flash Cooking System.

The lid which keeps it’s contents securely stored has a lip and hole to turn your cooking system into a drinking cup.

The bottom burner protector also doubles as a measuring cup, drinking cup, or small bowl.

The entire stove is covered with a insulated membrane helping to ensure no one or thing gets burned.

The stainless steel burner attaches right under the Flash Cup with an adjustable ring to get the temperature just right, and has a foldable tripod to ensure it never falls over.

Coming in at just over 15 ounces, this is a very small and lightweight stove to pack with you into the backcountry.

After using it a few times and reading other reviews about the Jetboil Flash, I don’t recommend cooking food directly into the flash system. The point of the stove is to boil water, and thus the bottom does get very hot.

When I cooked oatmeal inside the flash I noticed some of the oats we’re a little burned from being so close to the heat.

The good thing is that most instant meals want you to poor the boiling water into their packaging to then cook for a set amount of time, and that’s absolutely perfect!
